Drug Identification for Corrections

This tuition-free 16-hour Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training class is designed to educate
correctional officers at the county, state, and federal levels, and jail nurses and will provide pertinent
information on recognizing current drug trends, clandestine clothing, paraphernalia, concealment methods,
symbols of the drug world and recognizing the variety of ways contraband is smuggled or mailed to correctional
facilities. One of the key factors in keeping both staff and inmates safe is recognizing substance abuse, overdose
signs and symptoms and being able to distinguishing between possible medical conditions which can mimic
drug use. The course will give a broad overview and break down the human body and how each of the 11 major
systems are affected by the use of substances. Whether it is a Huber inmate returning from work, bookings or
sentenced inmates drug use is prevalent. The key to officer and inmate safety is recognizing drug use and
properly documenting those observations.

• Booking procedures and medical screenings                  • Signs and symptoms of drug use
• Paraphernalia, clothing, and tattoos                                • Common substances unknowingly provided to inmates
• Drug categories                                                               • K-9 deployment
• Physiology                                                                       • Report writing
